Become a movement

If you’ve gotten anything at all out of following Christ, if his love has made any difference in your life, if being in a community of the Spirit means anything to you, if you have a heart, if you care— then do me a favor: Agree with each other, love each other, be deep-spirited friends. Don’t push your way to the front; don’t sweet-talk your way to the top. Put yourself aside, and help others get ahead. Don’t be obsessed with getting your own advantage. Forget yourselves long enough to lend a helping hand. ~Philippians 2:1-4(The Message)

Imagine losing everything. Imagine uprooting your entire family. Your house is gone. Your clothes. Your children’s toy and books, your photographs and memories crushed. Imagine your job is gone and the only option you have left is to leave your country. Imagine.

What kind of panic would settle in your mind? What kind of anxiety?

Now imagine you get to this country into the loving embrace of family and waiting for you are clothes for your entire family, food and shelter. Great right? You would think(at least I would), that their family and friends had rallied around them to support them. But what if I told you complete strangers did? Strangers from thousands of miles away.

On Tuesday I posted a blog with a message from a friend. Other friends had been in Japan during the earthquake and tsunami and lost everything. Devastated, they desperately were trying to get back to the US. My friend set up a facebook page with his message for help and invited his facebook friends to join. There were 104 people.

I messaged my friend and asked if it was okay to spread the word as I had noticed the group was “private”. After getting the okay, I sent an email to my Bible study group here in Colorado and invited all of my facebook friends to the group as well asking for help and to forward it along. His 104 friends forwarded it to their friends, who forwarded it their friends.

By Wednesday night there were 946 people in that group.

Friends from Colorado and Florida who barely knew me and certainly didn’t know this family were offering to help. The rallying cry had been heard. They had no vested interest, no tax write off, bonus points, or free raffle tickets, just an abundance of love as Christ has called us to.

Satan has fed us a line that one person can’t make a difference and we’ve bought it. “Man, the worlds problems are so big, there’s nothing I can do to make a dent”, we say. And then one person steps out in desperation, seeking help for those in need and sparks a wildfire.

Why? Because love is contagious.

Take a look at this video:

One person is perhaps just a nutcase, but many people are a movement and it just takes one to start it.
