pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks ~1 Thessalonians 5:17-18 My prayer life has sucked lately. It’s one of those things you don’t dare say as a Christian but if we are honest with each other I think we can all admit we have times where we just struggle with some particular part of our walk, whether it be prayer or reading or being kind or patient. For whatever reason though it’s okay to admit we are struggling with patience but prayer and staying in the Word seem uncouth as if we lose part of our Christianity if we dare admit it. I’m unclear why I felt dried up in this area. In reflection there are things on the horizon for me which will require deeper strength and diligence and wisdom. Perhaps like a tree without water I needed to be thirsty in order to grow roots much deeper into… [Read More]

Why I love Buddha

Dana Fisher Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. -1 Peter 4:8 A few years ago, me and Dave would grab coffee in downtown Quincy after serving meals at the Crisis Center and just talk about controversial topics in Christianity: war, soldiers, guns, world religions, etc… Having grown up together, we could do this with civility even with opposing views because we loved each other regardless. Our differing views didn’t prevent either of us from going to heaven, we weren’t debating whether Jesus was just a man, but merely things with which many a Christian struggles to define. He had already known where I was coming from, both growing up in similar church surroundings(and sometimes the same one), and I wanted to understand better where he was coming from. The ideas he was throwing at me were strange, yet sounded and felt right in my… [Read More]
Shooting Ourselves in the Foot

Dana Fisher What will it take for us to get it through our thick skulls that bringing a fight is not the answer? That anger only begets more anger? That hatred has no place in the life of a Christian? That Jesus would never hold a picket sign of malice and in fact would be comforting those in pain and hurting. That he would be crying with them. I normally brush aside silly antics by misguided religious folk. The last thing they need is attention. If I’ve learned anything I’ve learned that attention just feeds the drama, causing it to grow unnecessarily. But sometimes it pushes the envelope to the point I’m embarrassed to say I’m a Christian and feel the need to defend the faith I’m passionate about. This is not how Christianity is! A few misguided people taint the whole bunch. Westboro Baptist Church is doing just that. A sign… [Read More]
Suffering for Christ

Dana Fisher But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. ~1 Peter 4:13 You ever notice the more you veer towards the Lord the harder life becomes? That straight and narrow path is narrow for a reason and sometimes, certainly for me, it feels as if either side is a ledge. When I look back at some of the big trials in my life I see a moment in time on that same point where I made a decision for Christ and against the World. We don’t teach that in Sunday School. We teach hey come give your life to Jesus and watch the blessings flow. I believe Christianity need come with a warning. Those blessings do abound but they come at a price. They also often come inside peace that surpasses understanding. I realize this is hard… [Read More]
Lausanne Movement – Faith
October 27th, 2010
Dana Fisher The idea of faith is so astounding to me. Belief in things unseen, so dear to ones heart that they would sacrifice for it, give to it, and even be martyred for it. It became increasingly evident as I was here that as an American I lack faith and a sense of urgency. I was talking to my new friend Peter, walking around the city of Cape Town when he said that his church was having a conference too, in December. In American fashion the next question out of my mouth was “What’s it about?”. His answer really put my question in perspective: “We don’t know yet.” As westernized Christianity goes we tend to strip God of the ability to blow our minds and direct our path. We hold committee meetings, decide on topics and discussions, invite specific speakers, and at the end pray “Lord bless this”. We’re so privileged… [Read More]
Lausanne Movement – Community
October 22nd, 2010
Dana Fisher My roommate Dave is one of the videographers here and was able to turn an idea he had into a great short video. I feel it is one of the more powerful pieces to come from the Lausanne Congress, at least for me personally. Take a minute to watch it: When signing up for the Cape Town 2010 Congress I had an option of where to stay and how many people to stay with. There were single, double, and quadruple rooms. For anyone who knows me well I don’t do well staying with people, especially people I don’t know. I knew I was doing this for a reason and so I chose to room in a quadruple room in order to interact with as many people as possible here in Cape Town. I was extremely hesitant about doing this but the Lord is faithful to those who do what He… [Read More]
Sometimes it’s all you have
September 11th, 2010
Dana Fisher If you’ve ever been nervous talking to a girl(or boy) and you fall all over your words you’ll understand where I am coming from. Sometimes when you are passionate or excited about something, the words can come out in a jumbled mess. It’s embarrassing but as you grow you realize confrontation is better than cowering and misunderstandings do occur. I wrote about the dysfunctional family of Christ, seeing firsthand how messed up I am and that I was not in the right place. My example was an experience of mine, but instead of coming out like I was looking at me it came out offensive to a particular church, with whom I have a long relationship. I have many friends there(including family) and owe my strong foundation in Christ to the years of faithful preaching of their pastors. I would like to say I’m sorry. I have nothing, nothing at… [Read More]
It’s Real Love

Dana Fisher But you – who are you to judge your neighbor? ~James 4:12 Last week a local newspaper headline began with the words “Bible Thumping Pastor…” A friend posted a status saying to call them and complain over the attack on Christians. Curious, I did a little searching and was able to find the article online and read it. After reading it, it didn’t seem so bad so I asked what was bad and if he had read it. His response: He hadn’t even read the article. Proverbs 21:23 says “He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity.” I have always read that and thought, “don’t call people jerks” or “don’t swear”, but this situation made me realize it also includes speaking inaccurately, and swaying peoples opinions on things I don’t know or fully understand. The comment itself wasn’t bad but swaying someone into believing a lie… [Read More]
