Distant Thanksgiving

You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. ~2 Corinthians 9:11 For the first time in my life I didn’t wake up to the smell of Thanksgiving day. There was no turkey in the oven, no pies on the counter, no potatoes being boiled. I was in a foreign place, completely across the country without the usual cast of characters(family and friends) around me. Coming here was something I knew I had to do and I certainly felt an air of confidence that the Lord would fulfill me if I was patient, but it was still a little weird waking up this morning. When I first got here my friend said a friend of his had invited us all over for Thanksgiving. I wasn’t overly excited about it but it would… [Read More]

The Sin you Love

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. ~James 1:14-15 The sin you hate is the sin you love. Seems a little confusing right? Sin is always enticing, otherwise why do it? Each of us struggles with different things and while one thing may stumble you, it may not weaken me. Those things which stumble us most often are those that we can easily pick out in others. They drive us crazy. It’s impossible to save someone from themselves when you haven’t looked into yourself first. Matthew 7: 3-5 tells us this plainly. Yet for me, I’m constantly in the mode to critique others without first coming before God on my knees for my own struggles and inadeqacy. If you’ve ever played any… [Read More]

Lausanne Movement – Community

My roommate Dave is one of the videographers here and was able to turn an idea he had into a great short video. I feel it is one of the more powerful pieces to come from the Lausanne Congress, at least for me personally. Take a minute to watch it: When signing up for the Cape Town 2010 Congress I had an option of where to stay and how many people to stay with. There were single, double, and quadruple rooms. For anyone who knows me well I don’t do well staying with people, especially people I don’t know. I knew I was doing this for a reason and so I chose to room in a quadruple room in order to interact with as many people as possible here in Cape Town. I was extremely hesitant about doing this but the Lord is faithful to those who do what He… [Read More]

Sometimes it’s all you have

If you’ve ever been nervous talking to a girl(or boy) and you fall all over your words you’ll understand where I am coming from. Sometimes when you are passionate or excited about something, the words can come out in a jumbled mess. It’s embarrassing but as you grow you realize confrontation is better than cowering and misunderstandings do occur. I wrote about the dysfunctional family of Christ, seeing firsthand how messed up I am and that I was not in the right place. My example was an experience of mine, but instead of coming out like I was looking at me it came out offensive to a particular church, with whom I have a long relationship. I have many friends there(including family) and owe my strong foundation in Christ to the years of faithful preaching of their pastors. I would like to say I’m sorry. I have nothing, nothing at… [Read More]

know thyself

hola. i believe it was socrates (sow-craits)johnson from bill and ted’s excellent adventure who said, “know thyself.” well socrates, i fully intend to. i’ve come to a point in my life where i am not all that concerned with hearing about my negative traits. i’ve actually come to the point of wanting to know more of them and even embracing some of them. i want to know the things that other people think about me and just won’t tell me. seriously, i can handle it! over the past couple of months i have been involved in a group that has allowed me to open up about the things that i struggle with, and they in turn have told me what they believe to be my flaws as onlookers to my life. side note: they are real jerks about it. i’m thinking about leaving the group. joke. in fact, they have… [Read More]

fuzzy lines

hola friends, i had a brief, but great, conversation with my friend jeremy yesterday when he visited my workplace. we were talking about the bible and some of its apparent contradictions. since jeremy is the pastor of his own community in hingham i will not speak to anything he said, but as you might assume, i am not too shy to let the world wide web know my current thoughts on the matter. a little background to start…i have, for a few years now, come to embrace the teachings, life, death and resurrection of jesus as the benchmark for which my life should be patterned (of course i fail. of course i cannot do it on my own). this is certainly not anything groundbreaking, but when it first occurred to me that jesus actually meant for us to take his word seriously my whole life changed. as one who grew up… [Read More]

Lausanne Open Forum

On Tuesday night I was lucky enough to attend on of the 12 open forums across the country hosted by the Lausanne Movement. If you don’t know about Lausanne you can read more about how it was formed on their about page. These “12 conversations, 12 cities” were set up to generate awareness of the upcoming CapeTown 2010 Congress. This is the third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelicalization. Headlining the panel included singers Derek Web and Sara Groves, author Os Guinness, and the co-founder of Bloodwater Mission Jenna Lee Some times you feel disconnected from reality in your desires. Amongst some close friends and in a Bible study I attend there is talk of getting out within our communities, about going through this world “to heavy” and on needing drastic social change. But at least for me there is this overwhelming sense that we’re traveling this road alone. From a… [Read More]

resurrection

hola friends and bloggers, i was watching cnn last night, and what do you know, shane claiborne was on. he was talking about how he and his friends have been combatting the healthcare crisis in america. it was a brief, but very interesting spot on “the situation room” (which i had never seen before last night). while the story about how they are tackling the issue of healthcare reform was interesting, i was most struck by one comment that he made to the reporter who was following him around. while walking through what used to be a crack house he said that he and his community “practice resurrection.” that’s just cool to me. it made me realize that we are all in the resurrection business. we are in a constant state of dying to this world and to ourselves and being made alive in Christ, and we have been given… [Read More]
