submit

Jesus became one of us, even a lowly rabbi in the middle of one of the most powerful empires in human history (solidarity). Jesus took on our curse and submitted to death by way of a torturous and bloody crucifixion (submission). i have begun to realize something that should have been obvious to me long ago. that which is systemic and oppressive can only be truly defeated through solidarity and submission. if there’s anything that the history of human poverty and war has proven to us is that we cannot combat such diseases with that which is easy or seemingly most effective (money or force). Jesus taught us a more narrow, more difficult, more life-giving way. it is true that we will always speak of war and that “the poor will always be with us,” but we are told that there was one who came to free us from both… [Read More]

old and new

genesis 4:3-11: “in the course of time cain brought to the LORD an offering of the fruit of the ground, and abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. and the LORD had regard for abel and his offering, but for cain and his offering he had no regard. so cain was very angry, and his face fell. the LORD said to cain, “why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? if you do well, will you not be accepted? and if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.” cain spoke to abel his brother. and when they were in the field, cain rose up against his brother abel and killed him. then the LORD said to cain, “where is abel your brother?” de said,”i do not… [Read More]

the hardest way to live

hey everyone, thanks so much for all of your fantastic insight into this issue. i resonate with everything that was written and struggle with the implications of being a peacemaker in this world of violence. it is quite simply the most difficult way to live. i have questioned, for quite some time, why it seems to be true that Christians (more than other people i speak with) have a hard time accepting that God asks us to love (and do good) to our enemies, to bless those who curse us and to turn the other cheek. not only does he ask us to live this way, but God himself lived this way through Jesus Christ. why is it that we praise the martyrs of 1st and 2nd century christianity, but we are now baffled by those who would rather die and kill? why do we continue to pluck out our… [Read More]

the God of peace

“peace by way of war is like purity by way of fornication.” – derek webb “nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it. it is a sword that heals.” – martin luther king jr. “eye for an eye leaves everyone blind.” – gandhi “do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” – paul the apostle “love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, and pray for those who abuse you.” – Jesus Related Posts:religion and evil: a random rantJesus CreedWhy I love BuddhaSuffering for ChristLausanne Movement – Worship

Don’t freak out!

For nothing is impossible with God. – Luke 1:37 I went to leave for work today and there was an odd white ring around my tire. I took a closer look and my wear bars were showing. A very bad sign and not something I should drive to work on. Okay, no problem I told myself. I called my mother who works for a tire company and got an appointment to get new tires. I can’t really afford them but it’s a need not a want at this point. With my appointment set I called work and told them I’d be working from home. As I sat on the computer doing the work thing I noticed my thermostat wasn’t on. It turns off when the furnace is blowing so I didn’t think much of it until the blower stopped and it still wasn’t on. Ooops, heat stopped working! It’s 20… [Read More]
