Superman a Christian?

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere. ~Luke 9:1-2, 6 I read a neat article today about the latest superman comic book. In short, superman goes to support protests in the Middle East. The U.S.A. is pissed that he did it, and Iran views his actions as that of the U.S.(and president) and an act of war. Realizing that he wants to go beyond helping one specific subset of people and that the only way to avoid the political red tape/mess he renounces his citizenship so he can become more global and less national. One of the interesting quotes from the… [Read More]

Guns for Gloves

Lord, should we strike with our swords? And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear. But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him. ~Luke 22:49-51 I picture life as concentric circles, like a tree with age rings, spiraling outward. Each moment has a beginning and an end but failing to learn from any one of them can have you spinning, tracing the same circle over and over. Learn from your mistake and start a new circle and like a tree with a new growth ring, so you grow as well. In 2006 I got what is known as an “LTC”, it’s a license to carry concealed firearms. Me and a buddy got it together with plans of hunting and protecting our homes. It seemed cool and macho and what a good Christian does. To… [Read More]

Why I love Buddha

Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. -1 Peter 4:8 A few years ago, me and Dave would grab coffee in downtown Quincy after serving meals at the Crisis Center and just talk about controversial topics in Christianity: war, soldiers, guns, world religions, etc… Having grown up together, we could do this with civility even with opposing views because we loved each other regardless. Our differing views didn’t prevent either of us from going to heaven, we weren’t debating whether Jesus was just a man, but merely things with which many a Christian struggles to define. He had already known where I was coming from, both growing up in similar church surroundings(and sometimes the same one), and I wanted to understand better where he was coming from. The ideas he was throwing at me were strange, yet sounded and felt right in my… [Read More]

Suffering for Christ

But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. ~1 Peter 4:13 You ever notice the more you veer towards the Lord the harder life becomes? That straight and narrow path is narrow for a reason and sometimes, certainly for me, it feels as if either side is a ledge. When I look back at some of the big trials in my life I see a moment in time on that same point where I made a decision for Christ and against the World. We don’t teach that in Sunday School. We teach hey come give your life to Jesus and watch the blessings flow. I believe Christianity need come with a warning. Those blessings do abound but they come at a price. They also often come inside peace that surpasses understanding. I realize this is hard… [Read More]

Lausanne Movement – Faith

The idea of faith is so astounding to me. Belief in things unseen, so dear to ones heart that they would sacrifice for it, give to it, and even be martyred for it. It became increasingly evident as I was here that as an American I lack faith and a sense of urgency. I was talking to my new friend Peter, walking around the city of Cape Town when he said that his church was having a conference too, in December. In American fashion the next question out of my mouth was “What’s it about?”. His answer really put my question in perspective: “We don’t know yet.” As westernized Christianity goes we tend to strip God of the ability to blow our minds and direct our path. We hold committee meetings, decide on topics and discussions, invite specific speakers, and at the end pray “Lord bless this”. We’re so privileged… [Read More]

Lausanne Movement – Conversation

Yesterday I received a message from my pastor back home on my facebook page. He wanted to let me know Wednesday night Bible studies hadn’t been the same and that they would be praying for me that night during the study. Such a small gesture goes such a long way when you are so far from home. To know that you are loved, missed, and being prayed for is very uplifting. There is a marketplace not far from my hotel which I have walked to a couple times to purchase some trinkets and handmade art for friends and family back home. Yesterday I made my way down to Greenmarket Square to purchase some things and get some fresh air in the middle of the day. On my way there I spoke to my roommates who told me there was an attempted armed robbery there and they had left quickly. I… [Read More]

Clarity Coming Down

but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; ~Isaiah 40:31 I don’t fly very often but when I do I generally fly at night. The atmosphere seems quieter and I usually nod off until we land. On the rare occasion that it is day time, I’ve had the unfortunate circumstance of bad weather and cloudy skies. All this translates in to me not being able to see outside the window and enjoy the view. Friday as I took an early morning flight to Denver the skies were clear across the country and the weather was beautiful. As I settled down in my aisle seat I realized no one was sitting in my row. I slid over to the window as we prepared for takeoff and watched through the small opening. Ascending through the sky I watched the boats in the… [Read More]

Confusing Peace

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus ~Phillipians 4:7 I saw it in her eyes as I slowly made my way down the line at the wake. It’s not something you can really put your finger on, not something that you can tell someone how to get or explain when you see it. I can only quantify it as “You know it when you see it”. Her eyes weren’t empty. She had just lost her son at 17 to a terrible disease but there was life still there as our eyes met. For someone who has witnessed this themselves, and has taken part in this peace, the words that come out next aren’t the words that someone at a wake would normally hear. They are no longer words of condolence so much as words of thanks, praise, and… [Read More]

Keep your sword, I’ll keep my Jesus

I am stunned by the lack of compassion and the brutal use of force by Christians. My Jesus never did any of that. I’m at a loss. The below conversation is real. I’ve only removed the names for anonymity. Below it you will find my thoughts about the whole thing. This conversation started as a result of a comment about the immigration law that was recently passed in Arizona PERSON 1 “is planning a trip out to Az. I will support them regardless of what the uninformed Boston city council says.” Now, these are the comments that followed: Dana Fisher: Maybe we should reread James 2. Maybe their motives aren’t pure and maybe they are trying to take advantage but who are we to judge? Hasn’t Christ called us to something higher than persecuting someone because they are from another country? Since when was this land “ours” and not the… [Read More]

Look Ma! No hands!

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” ~Matthew 14:30 When I was little, and less face it, even now, I tried to push the limits of what I can do. Our bodies yearn for freedom and to reach places we’ve never been. At first maybe it was taking the training wheels off but within weeks you were trying to ride that bike without hands. I was watching a kid on the train riding in the middle of the car. There were plenty of places to sit, and plenty of places to grab a piece of the bar as a handle but he stood, legs in a wide braced stance in between the seats. We were moving along at a good pace and he was doing well for himself. Suddenly the train lurched a bit and his hand went lunging… [Read More]
