When I was a young teenager my uncle came out and told us he was gay. I remember some shock from family, but I don’t remember too much overall. There were no mass hysterics(at least not visibly amongst us kids) and he certainly wasn’t ostracized. In essence, nothing really changed inside the family dynamic. The foundation of love still existed. Years later at 19 years old I took a job as an intern at Bayer Diagnostics working with my dad. Not long before that my uncle had been diagnosed with lung cancer after smoking most of his life. He lived fairly close, and having worked there himself at one point, would come down often to visit former friends and co-workers. I spent quite a few lunch breaks walking to the local pizza shop with him and my dad, hanging out and just chatting. That summer means a lot to me. ... [Read More]

A little discussion for your minds: Who gets in to heaven? Take a look at the article on Rob Bell, written by Justin Taylor. If you don’t want to read the article, at least scroll down and watch the video(the most important part). Many know that I am a believer in non-violent resistence, and am frequently called a pacifist. Having a background laced with anger and violence and continually struggling with my temper it took 27 years to come to the realization that Jesus really did call us to something drastically different than how we operate as people and nations. I want to discuss this, not because I side with Rob Bell or find truth in his statements, but because I see those believing in nonviolent resistance and a loving God getting lumped into this ‘other’ group which, in my opinion, is veering off the path into a scary realm.... [Read More]

But rejoice inasmuch as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. ~1 Peter 4:13 You ever notice the more you veer towards the Lord the harder life becomes? That straight and narrow path is narrow for a reason and sometimes, certainly for me, it feels as if either side is a ledge. When I look back at some of the big trials in my life I see a moment in time on that same point where I made a decision for Christ and against the World. We don’t teach that in Sunday School. We teach hey come give your life to Jesus and watch the blessings flow. I believe Christianity need come with a warning. Those blessings do abound but they come at a price. They also often come inside peace that surpasses understanding. I realize this is hard... [Read More]

But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death. ~James 1:14-15 The sin you hate is the sin you love. Seems a little confusing right? Sin is always enticing, otherwise why do it? Each of us struggles with different things and while one thing may stumble you, it may not weaken me. Those things which stumble us most often are those that we can easily pick out in others. They drive us crazy. It’s impossible to save someone from themselves when you haven’t looked into yourself first. Matthew 7: 3-5 tells us this plainly. Yet for me, I’m constantly in the mode to critique others without first coming before God on my knees for my own struggles and inadeqacy. If you’ve ever played any... [Read More]

is religion the cause of evil and suffering in this world? this is a question i have heard answered in the affirmative by many an atheist. while i can’t say that i blame them for feeling this way in our day, historically speaking, nothing could be further from the truth. in fact, just the opposite seems to be true. throughout history, it has been the powerful and educated in society who have manipulated the misinformed and undereducated in order to co-opt their faith with the ideological and/or political pursuits of the elite (see adolf hitler). even a cursory view of the history of the christian faith will prove that what drove the violence in the first 4 centuries a.d. was that of a pursuit of political power to be attained and/or maintained. early christian history proves that those who did not render full allegiance to the powers that be were... [Read More]

My little nephew was running around the house as we waited for the rehearsal dinner for my sisters wedding playing with his toy sword and killing bad guys(rocks). As someone asked him where he was going after mommy got married he started rambling on about his “big friends” in rapid succession: Mickey, Goofy, Donald, Tinkerbell. He is so excited to go see them. The whole situation of love, marriage, and superhero’s got me thinking. The story of Superman is fascinating as a young kid. Someone who can’t be hurt, who fights for justice, and rights the wrongs. He has one only weakness, kryptonite, that make his power hopeless and strips him down to human. Since, as a little kid, we don’t know of any kryptonite, we run around pretending simply that we are invincible and can fix or right anything. Somewhere along the line as we grow older we lose... [Read More]

On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” ~Matthew 9:12-13 Remember building sand castles on the beach when you were a kid? Big colorful pails, filled with sand and water; You’d dump them over, tap on the top and gently slide it up, hoping it didn’t crumble. I was never really good at it, only being able to build those cylinders from pails and never building anything close to some of those masterpieces you see on tv, but it was still fun to build, sculpt, and play with friends and nearby beach goers. I’d build competitively against my brother or friends, who could build the best, biggest, or coolest castle. Inevitably, as your back was turned taking a... [Read More]

When he had spit on the man’s eyes and put his hands on him, Jesus asked, “Do you see anything?” ~Mark 8:23 One of the defining things about me is the amount of times I’ve been burned. Whether it be a friendship, relationship, co-worker, job. Whatever the situation, I believe it’s safe to say most of us have been hurt by some thing or some one at some point. You can’t help but be shaped by the things with which you’ve come face to face. And so as I was younger, lacking faith and a strong foundation in Jesus, I allowed these events to consume me. I have plenty of people who have seen the transformation in my life from then to now who could expound on some tales you may have a hard time believing. I was angry, very angry. It fueled my addiction to adrenaline, to danger, and... [Read More]

I’ve only removed the names for anonymity. Below it you will find my thoughts about the whole thing. This conversation started as a result of a comment about the immigration law that was recently passed in Arizona PERSON 1 “is planning a trip out to Az. I will support them regardless of what the uninformed Boston city council says.” Now, these are the comments that followed: Dana Fisher: Maybe we should reread James 2. Maybe their motives aren’t pure and maybe they are trying to take advantage but who are we to judge? Hasn’t Christ called us to something higher than persecuting someone because they are from another country?
